Replying to a tweet from @tobie

I have no problems with AMP, the open source format (accessibility issues notwithstanding).

I have no problems with AMP’s governance model.

I have serious problems with AMP’s privileged position in Google Search. It’s an abuse of power.

I think pretty much everyone agrees about the Search carousel issue. It was just reacting to what I perceived was disfavorably comparing AMP to Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News (both closed formats on closed platforms). But maybe I just misinterpreted your tweets. Jeremy Keith Jeremy Keith Tony Haile

I’m expecting at some point an intervention from the EU and another huge fine…

Maybe a means of reimbursing teams who had to unexpectedly set aside other priorities in order to plan, then fork or rebuild their codebase to retain their relevance in Search? Seems like so much collective effort - the research and meetings alone…

Seriously though, it’s such a blatant abuse of their near-monopoly search position, though I don’t know if they (the EU) are looking at it

How do you think Google benefits—in an anticompetitive way—of a large adoption of AMP?

Nando

Because searchers clicking links in Google results never arrive at the actual site where owners benefit from own advertising etc as Google serves pages from its servers. Our did that change?

This is a good question. I am curious too but I certainly don’t know. Maybe they don’t. My concern is more around the burden placed on publishers to adopt very particular tech (standards-based on not) just to stay competitive in search. Right. But that’s clearly not something that would interest whatever EU organization is in charge of anticompetitive behavior (as the OP suggested).

Tobie Langel

That said, improving or maintaining your position in search has required significant investments over the years as search engines used various metrics to rank results. I mean there’s a whole industry that’s focused on just that.

Tobie Langel

Sure, these were based on standards (I believe open source and standardization are converging, but that’s a different story) and weren’t so radical. But it’s concretely nothing fundamentally new.

Google controls the <amp-ad> element (doesn’t it?). So Google is both an ad network and the platform for delivering all ads* on all AMP pages, regardless of ad network. *Unless it’s possible to shows ads on AMP pages without the <amp-ad> element, not sure about that.

Nando

@tobie this is all very instructive, thanks. Amp has obviously evolved a great deal since I formed my initial impressions

You’re welcome. Happy for folks to be pissed off at AMP, I just want to make sure it’s for the right reasons. ;)

Šime Vidas

“No” to what specifically? 😅 I didn’t say that other ad networks weren’t supported. I said that Google controls <amp-ad>, i.e., how ads are implemented on AMP pages. Competitive ad networks have to use Google-controlled <amp-ad> on AMP pages, unlike on the regular web.

Tobie Langel

Well, every ad network, including Google’s, has to use this. So it’s not like it’s giving anyone an edge.

Tobie Langel

Right. But that hasn’t happened in practice that I know of. Also, this wouldn’t be possible with the current process, and clearly won’t be once the project moves to a foundation.
