45 years ago, 01969-10-29T22:30, the first ARPANET message was sent.
The message: “lo”
(supposed to be “login” but the system crashed)
Also on Twitter
@adactio Or was it the start of ‘lol’
I choose to think it was ‘lol’
@adactio I heard it was actually supposed to be “lol FIRST!”
@adactio First usage of “lo” as a greeting?
@adactio hence the biblical “Lo and hold the line!”
@adactio I find it hard to conceive that it took an hour to recover from the crash. An hour with no internet.
@adactio the first message was supposed to be “login” but the system crashed, so the second one was “lol”
@adactio In 45 years we’ve gone from ‘lo’ to ‘yo’?
@adactio It was supposed to be “lol.”
@adactio “they sent a press release claiming that the system’s overwhelming popularity had caused the crash & received $3.2MM in funding.”
